In the US, requirements vary greatly by state. Most states require a license or certification in acupuncture. With a license or certification, acupuncture can be performed by physicians, physician assistants, nurses, chiropractors, and sometimes other medical professionals. In the UK, only a physician can legally practice acupuncture; nurses and chiropractors cannot. Be sure to check local medical and acupuncture professional organizations to find out what is required in your area.

You'll find licensed acupuncturists in medical clinics as well as in med spas. Treatments should be relatively similar in each setting, as there is no special equipment needed to perform the procedure other than the needles themselves.

How do you find certified practitioners in your area?

That's pretty easy. The American Academy of Medical Acupuncture has a directory of doctors around the country, searchable by state. Just plug in your state, look for your city, and choose an acupuncturist near you.

If you prefer a spa setting, you can do a web search for "acupuncture spa"; there are many throughout the country. But check the credentials of each individual performing the treatments and use only those who have been certified for your area.
