Botox Treatment for Facial Wrinkles

A Botox treatment relaxes the muscles and reduces the appearance of lines and wrinkles on the face.

One of the newest and most popular wrinkle treatments, it is not something to be taken lightly. As a cosmetic injection, it does have its risks. Botox is a derivative of a toxic substance and can cause damage if not administered properly. Injections should be performed by a qualified technician at a medical spa - please avoid Botox parties! You really don't know what's being injected into your body at a spa party, and the correct placement of the injection is critical to the success of the treatment. This procedure cannot be performed by someone without the proper training.

There are also topical products that use many of the same ingredients as an injection. If you're uncomfortable with the idea of a cosmetic injection in your forehead or face, this kind of treatment may be a better alternative.

Cosmetic injections cannot remove facial wrinkles, but they can greatly reduce the depth and appearance of wrinkles, especially those caused by facial expressions. The muscles tend to "remember" expressions causing permanent wrinkles in the forehead and between the brows. Botox injections relax the muscles and "release" the wrinkles to some extent. They do, however, "paralyze" the muscles to achieve this affect, sometimes resulting in a mask-like appearance.

The effect is temporary and will need to be repeated 3 - 4 times a year to maintain the smoother appearance. Botox injections cost approximately $150 to $400 per area treated. The most common side effect is redness or swelling at the injection site, but more serious complications (including those affecting the function of the muscles) are possible.
