CranioSacral Massage

Craniosacral massage is a holistic massage therapy involving gentle massage of the head and neck. Used by massage therapists, physical therapists, chiropractors, and osteopaths, it helps to relieve stress, neck and back pain, and migraines.

This massage is performed with the client fully clothed and laying face-up on a massage table. There are 10 steps that may be used in the therapy session, starting with gentle manipulation of the head and neck, and lengthening of the spine.

The therapist then places their hands lightly on the patient's body, "listening through the hands" to the energy and directing further treatment.

This type of therapy dates to around 1900 and was developed from theories generated by physician William Sutherland. Dr. Sutherland believed that there was a rhythmic movement of the cranial bones that, if not functioning properly, resulted in tension and pain. He also believed that light touch could detect energy within the body, which helped to direct the therapy.

Today, CST is used as a preventive measure due to its ability to fight disease, and is effective for a wide range of medical problems including pain (migraine, fibromyalgia, and back pain), central nervous system disorders, chronic fatigue, and immune disorders.

Cranial massage takes a whole-person approach to healing and acknowledges the inter-connections of mind, body and spirit. It is an effective form of treatment for a wide range of illnesses and is suitable for people of all ages including babies, children and the elderly.
