Deep Tissue Massage Therapy

Deep tissue massage therapy is one of the spa body treatments used to relax and loosen chronically tense muscles, usually in the back and shoulder area.

The massage therapist uses slower movements and firmer pressure than in classic (or Swedish) massage to relieve tension and ease stiffness in a deeper layer of muscles.

The direct pressure applied during a deep massage can also physically break down adhesions in tendons and ligaments, which can reduce blood flow and cause chronic pain. Breaking the adhesions can also improve movement in stiff muscles.

This massage does more than just relax the muscles. It is used to relieve chronic pain from fibromyalgia, arthritis, and stress injuries like carpal tunnel syndrome. It can also improve limited mobility problems and muscle spasms.

Hot stone massage thereapy can also be used in conjunction with a deep tissue massage. The stones warm and relax the muscles, making them more pliable. The stones can also assist the therapist in applying pressure and reaching the deeper muscles.

This therapy may be uncomfortable at times, but it should never be painful. Make sure your therapist knows when a movement is painful or if too much pressure is being applied so he or she can adjust the pressure. Likewise, if you don't feel the pressure is strong enough, notify your therapist about that, too. The massage will be less effective if the deeper muscles are not being reached.

This massage should never be performed on pregnant women, and those with arthritis should consult their physician before getting a deep tissue massage.
