Lymphatic Massage and Lymphatic Drainage

>

A lymphatic massage, or lymphatic drainage, is a technique used to facilitate the flow of fluid throught the lymphatic system. It is one of several detoxifying spa treatments with many benefits.

The lymph system carries fluid throughout the body, carrying toxins away from healthy tissue and bringing infection-fighting antibodies to affected tissue.

Unlike the circulatory system with the heart, the lymph system does not have a "pump" to help circulate the fluid. Manual massage of the lymph nodes is necessary to maintain the flow of lymphatic fluid. This can be initiated at any point in the lymph system; the point of the massage is to get the fluid moving away from the affected area and ultimately released from the body.

This massage is a very light and gentle technique. The therapist does not "rub" the skin or manipulate the muscles to encourage drainage; a very light touch is all that is needed.

The video below demonstrates the technique for the neck and face, one of the most common areas to receive the massage.

Without manual massage, the fluid can be blocked, causing swelling and possible infection (which should always be treated by a physician, not a massage therapist).

Lymphatic drainage can help reduce the affects of allergies in the sinuses, and reduce swelling in the arms and legs as a result of surgery or other ailments. It can also promote healing of injuries after the acute swelling as passed.

This type of massage should always be performed by a licensed therapist.
