Mayonnaise hair treatments have been around for years.
In the 1940's and 50's, they were a low-cost alternative to "fancy" conditioners or a salon treatment for dry hair. In the '70's they were popular because they are a "natural" hair treatment.
Today, the combination of low cost and natural ingredients makes them appealing to everyone.
The oils and protein in mayonnaise makes it the perfect treatment for dry, damaged hair - and it's so easy to do!
You Can Make Your Own Mayonnaise!
You can use mayonnaise right out of the jar you bought at the supermarket, of course (about 1/4 cup); but it's so easy to make your own mayo - why not try?
Just beat the yolk of one egg with 1/3 cup of olive oil until it is light and frothy and forms peaks - that's it!
The egg protein nourishes the hair while the olive oil locks in moisture and provides shine.
Simple Mayo Treatment
First, put a couple of towels into the dryer for a few minutes to warm them.
Wash your hair, rinse, then apply the 1/4 - 1/3 cup of mayo. Massage into scalp (if dry) and hair, focusing on the dry ends.
Pile your hair on top of your head, wrap the hair in plastic wrap and cover with a warm towel. Leave this on for about 30 minutes, changing towels mid-way (or when the first towel is no longer warm).
Rinse thoroughly - dry as usual and you're done!
Mayo and Olive Oil Treatment
For extra conditioning, use the above method but add about 1 extra Tablespoon of olive oil to the mayo. The extra olive oil will boost the moisture and shine for very dry hair.
You can also add a few drop of scented essential oils if you like.
