Reflexology Massage

How does reflexology massage work? It's similar, in some ways, to acupuncture or acupressure, in that pressure is applied to certain points that release energy to corresponding body parts.

Unlike those traditional Chinese techniques, however, reflexology massage is usually applied to just the hands or feet.

It is a form of complementary medicine, used along with Western medicine to support or assist treatments you may be receiving from your doctor.

While the massage is relaxing, it's real purpose is in healing. Regular massage sessions can help you to maintain overall health by releasing, and then maintaining, the flow of energy throughout the body. Blocked energy can cause stress and pain, as well as other ailments.

The massage points correspond to many points and organs of the body. It is also called zone therapy, because the foot is divided into zones as well as specific points. The toes, for example, correspond to the head, and the heel is related to the chest. The therapist will massage the specific point that corresponds to the ailment being treated.

The therapist will often knead the entire foot or hand to release energy and support the functions of organs throughout the body. He or she can also target specific organs by targeting specific points on the hand or foot. The pressure is firm, but not hard. It should not be painful or ticklish.

This kind of massage is performed while seated and fully clothed (except for the foot or hand) - it's a great massage for "beginners" or those uncomfortable with a full massage or acupuncture needles.
