A Sea Salt Scrub, or Salt Glow, is a method of skin exfoliation using sea salt to scrub away dead skin cells.
Spa body scrubs act as a body polish to smooth away rough, dry skin.Sea salt is one of many ingredients that can physically exfoliate the skin, sloughing off the top layer of dead cells. After a quick rinse, body oils or lotions can be applied to moisturize and keep your skin smooth.
The salt scrub can be performed on almost any part of the body and is commonly performed on the back, arms, and legs. It's a bit too rough to be used as a facial scrub, though.
The massage therapist will mix the salt with oils (usually a soothing fragrance) and applu the mixture to exposed skin on the arms, legs, or back. The salt mixture is then rubbed into the skin, rather firmly, to rub off dead skin cells. It is then rinsed off with water or a Vichy shower. The scrub is usually performed in a spa wet room for this reason. A lotion applied after the rinse keeps moisture locked in.
The action of rubbing the salt mixture on the skin also acts as a kind of massage; the therapist will use long, smooth strokes to help with relaxation while the skin is being exfoliated.
A Salt Glow treatment is often used to prepare the skin prior to a body mask or body wrap by cleansing the pores, or to smooth the skin before tanning to ensure even color; but it can also be used on its own simply to smooth and soften the skin.
Body scrubs are available at beauty day spas as well as resort or destination spas and are generally considered safe for anyone, unless you have extremely sensitive skin.
