Swedish massage therapy is wonderful for relaxing tense and overworked muscles. It's a treat to receive this massage at a spa after a good workout.
Spa massage therapy can also help reduce the stiffness of arthritis and other joint pain.
Swedish massage originated, of course, in Sweden where it is called a "classic massage". Swedish massage involves 5 basic strokes to knead the muscle tissue and improve circulation. The strokes are firm, but this is not a deep-tissue massage.
The five strokes are:
• Effleurage - Long, smooth strokes from the base of the neck to the base of the spine
• Petrissage - A kneading motion which actually lifts the muscles away from the skeleton
• Friction - Deep, circular strokes using the fingertips instead of the whole hand
• Tapotement - As the name suggests, this is a tapping motion using the side of the hand or the tips of the fingers.
• Vibration - Rapidly shaking the body (along the back) to increase circulation
Oils are used to ensure smooth, flowing movement during the massage. Rhythmic movements are essential to a proper Swedish massage.
The various strokes employed in Swedish massage loosen the "knots" in the muscles, relieve stiffness of the muscles and joints, and increase circulation.
This is the massage most commonly performed in the U.S. and is great for a first-time visit. It is perfectly acceptable to have this massage performed while partially clothed if that makes you more comfortable.
